New York is a place all its own. It is a genuine place,
with real people with real lives. It is the pinnacle of American
culture in many ways and stands apart from the retirement
communities and glitzy resort destinations, as well as the
also-rans. In a way, it is no more part of America than
Atlanta is part of the South; having more in common with
the great cities of Europe than it does with, say, suburban
Dallas.
I remember meeting a woman in New York City who
was born on a farm in Italy. She equated farms with
poverty and was surprised that I would want anything
to do with a farm. We talked for a while before I left
the office where she worked at 1 WTC. Whether she
survivied the ensuing tragedy there I do not know.
To live in New York requires a unique set of tradeoffs.
You give up a lot and get a lot back in return. It isn't
a bad deal.
But it's not for me. I'll put up with the bad restaurants
and relative lack of cultural depth in return for the
space and the interaction with the land.
